I’ve been craving Christmas foods and atmosphere, so last night I made my first eggnog from a recipe I found on the Web. I know I’d sipped it sometime years ago — I can’t remember when — but even from such a faint memory, this potion of egg, milk, rum, whiskey, cream and nutmeg evoked Christmas for me as surely as that animated Rudolph TV special. And the alcohol invoked a dizzy good cheer. I don’t know if it looks right in the photo, but it tasted delicious.
Mari introduced me to my new favorite fruit cake alternative, the German stollen. The dry, dense breadlike consistency (it’s made with yeast) seems to balance the iced sugar on top and make it less sickeningly sweet than more indulgent desserts.
Missing you folks back in the U.S. during the holidays and wish I could share these goodies with you…

Hi Rick (and Mari too)…
Happy Christmas season! (I like to extend the holiday for as long as it’s meant to be – til January 6!) It has been a good time here so far. Northwest holiday weather is cloudy and damp, some rain, maybe some snow in the mountains. I have never really been a big egg-nog fan, but the past few years I’ve enjoyed egg-nog lattes. Glad you could find a good recipe to experiment with… and that holiday cheer really does reach around the globe. Peace to you & Mari in the coming year!
Hey Cat! Mari and I will be in Washington from Jan 15 – 22, and I’ll be in the Bay Area from the 22nd to the 25th. It would be nice to meet up. Happy holidays! Let me know how the eggnog goes…
Hey, Tessa! Yeah, keep celebrating. It’s only the second day of Christmas, right?
I assume the eggnog latte is a Starbucks creation? Maybe that would go well with eggnog french toast…
Maybe Mari and I can see you in Washington. I’ll email…
